Prayer

Chapter 11:  Dreams, Prayer, Out-of-Body Experiences and Meditation

You Have Chosen to Remember: A Journey of Self-Awareness, Peace of Mind and Joy by James Blanchard Cisneros.

Prayer is powerful. Pray as you will. Pray to whomever you wish. But if I may offer a little advice, it is to pray from your heart and learn to listen. Most people offer words or prayers that they were taught as children, then get up and go to wherever they think they need to go to. Again, pray as you will, but in my own personal life, it has been the prayers that came directly from my heart that produced the most notable results. Also, instead of getting up and leaving after you have had your say, try to sit still for a little while and listen. As any friend would appreciate your listening to him or her, so too would God. Yes, God speaks to you more than you know. In fact, God is always communicating with you in some way or another. Yet the reason that you do not always hear Him is because you are not always listening. My friend, God speaks to all of us, yet few among us choose to listen. If you would sit still for even five minutes a day and just listen to God and feel His presence within you, this simple act would forever change your life.

The following excerpt from Soren Kierkegaard’s Journals illustrates the importance of listening to God:

36 The immediate person thinks and imagines that when he prays, the important thing, the thing he must concentrate upon, is that God should hear what he is praying for. And yet, in the true, eternal sense, it is just the reverse: the true relation in prayer is not when God hears what is prayed for, but when the person praying continues to pray until he is the one who hears, who hears what God wills. The immediate person, therefore, uses many words and, therefore, makes demands in his prayer; the true man of prayer only attends.

Taking time to listen to God seems like a fantastic component to add to my prayer time. Thanks.
